Someone has told us about floor signs for dementia sufferers to follow to find e.g the toilet. Do you do such things?
That’s a very interesting idea that I’ve not come across before.
If you wanted to stick something to the floor you would need a solid floor (ie. not carpeted) which is not really ideal if falls can be an issue – which they usually will be.
It’s a similar issue to using directional signs – signs which have arrows on – in so far as the person with dementia will probably not hold the ‘message’ from the sign even if they understand what the arrow means in the first place.
It is currently our experience that the most effective approach is to make it very clear where the toilet is. In other words, whatever method is used, indicates that you have arrived at the toilet.
Furthermore, what we are learning is that; clear indication of where the toilet is encourages people to use the toilet because they have located it (as they wander around the home) not necessarily because they need it at that time.
This is all quite tricky to put into words so I hope I have succeeded?
Another issue with messages on the floor is that many people with Dementia will see this as some sort of obstacle which can lead to all sorts of stress and associated complications.
I’m sure this idea will work for some people but I think in general terms it’s not perhaps an idea to be encouraged and at worst, could actually be quite problematic. -

How easy is it to fit the signs – we have an odd-job man and he has not fitted signs before?
The signs and Memory Boxes are very easy to fit: we enclose a fixing template for each unit which is taped onto the wall or door in the desired position – we recommend the signs are fixed lower than standard signs as your resident’s line of vision is much lower. We recommend no more than 1200mm from the floor.
Once you have your template fixed at the correct height, the drill positions are clearly marked, with the holes then being plugged and screwed and the signs then fitted over the screws.
The Memory Boxes fit in exactly the same way.
All our signs have the screw positions in the same place should you have to move them at any stage you will avoid any re-drilling or unsightly holes.
Both the signs and Memory Boxes have been extensively tested and are VERY secure once in place. However, should you want extra security we can also supply a small locking plate.
If you do not have a 'handy man', we have installers available throughout the UK at your disposal – please ask for a quote. -
How secure are the Signs and Memory Boxes?
This is our Managing Director Peter Rose – he weighs 12stone 7lbs and is dangling from the Memory Box! Once located properly they are VERY secure but we can provide an additional locking plate for extra security if your environment warrants it. Alternatively the boxes can be face- fixed too. -
Are the colours of the signs synonymous with the area or activity?
The colours are entirely a matter of choice but we will provide advice on colour combinations if requested. Having said that, where the toilets are concerned, our recommendation, based on the best current knowledge, is that Red or Yellow are the most effective colours to employ here for the signage, the doors and the toilet seat. The result being that the residents are very able to learn that this highly visible colour represents the location of the toilet. Naturally, one will then avoid using this colour for anywhere except the toilet.

We have some bathrooms with toilets - should we use double signs or is there a different sign for this?
I can’t provide a definitive answer at this time but my opinion is to place the emphasis on the most important function here which I’ll assume (without having visited your site) is the toilet. A combination of messages may cause unnecessary confusion.

You have given the width dimensions - what are the average height dimensions?
They range between 8" to 14" for the large version and 6" to 10" for the smaller version. The general consensus of opinion amongst the people we listen to is that, where at all possible, that the larger signs are used as they are quite simply more visible. However, the smaller version has been included as there are inevitably situations where size is a limiting factor.

Do you have one for a conservatory?
If you would like a design for a conservatory, we will be more than happy to design one for you free of charge.
-
The £25 toilet seats, are these a toilet seat sign or an actual toilet seat?
This is for the toilet seat itself.
